Harvard Medical School

In this article we will be taking a closer look at the one of the top medical schools in the USA today. Certainly when it comes to medical school, Harvard Medical School or HMS is one of the most prestigious of all schools in the USA.

The school is located in Longwood Medical Area which is located in the Mission Hill area of Boston, Massachusetts. It was found in 1782 by Doctor John warren and now is the third oldest of all the medical schools to be found in the USA.

Originally when it was founded the faculty of the school consisted just of 3 members (Dr. John Warren, Benjamin Waterhouse and Aaron Dexter). Whilst today the school boasts a full time faculty team of nearly 8,000. 2,900 make up the full and part time faculty members who are allowed to vote whilst the other 5,000 are made up of those either full or part time instructors who are unable to vote.

During the first few years all lectures at the school took place in the basement of Harvard Hall and then the Holden Chapel. In fact the first class which comprised only 2 students did not actually graduate from Harvard Medical School until 1788. Then in 1810 the school moved to 49 Marlborough Street in Boston. Then by 1816 and through to 1846 the school then became known as the Massachusetts Medical College of Harvard University and had now relocated to Mason Street it then again moved to North Grove Street in Boston in 1847 and then once more it moved to Copley Square in Boston in 1883.

Finally the school moved to its current location at Longwood Avenue during 1906 and this is where the school has been established ever since. It is known as the "Great White Quadrangle" as the 5 buildings are all made from white marble.

In order to gain a place at such a medical school as Harvard Medical School there are a number of things that a student should do. Firstly they will need to complete an AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) form. All you have to do with this form is fill it in and then tick in the box against the schools which you would like your application sent to. As soon as you have completed this form you need to send it in as soon as possible (usually by June or July). Once received by AMCAS you will then probably receive secondary application forms from the schools you are interested in and these should be completed and returned as soon as you are able to. You will soon discover that each school and Harvard Medical School secondary application forms are different from each other so you will need to read each one through carefully before completing and sending back.
