Certainly in recent years in the USA there has been a steady increase in the number of students now wishing to attend medical school and so gain a career in medicine. In order to gain admission to medical school there are a number of requirements that each pre-med student will need to fulfill in order to increase their chances of being accepted. Many schools today are now looking for those students who are able to show that they diligent, disciplined as well as being responsible people and being well organized. Also they look at those students who have the potential and show the most promise in order to succeed in this very stressful and dedicated subject. But as well as showing the above abilities and skills many schools will decide on which students they accept because of their GPA (grade point average) and academic course work that they have carried out prior to applying. Although most students today will want to major in biology many schools are now trying to encourage their students to choose those majors which can actually provide them with a more diverse amount of knowledge. They will look to students to take a number of different subjects including those relating to both maths and science. However there are certain requirements that a student must have taken in order for them to gain medical school admission and these requirements are as follows:- 1. 1 year of biology which includes working within a laboratory environment. 2. 1 year of inorganic chemistry again with time spent working in a laboratory environment. 3. 1 year of organic chemistry and as previously mentioned above time spent working in a laboratory. 4. 1 year of English studies - all medical students need to be able to write clearly and understand everything that they are reading. 5. 1 year of either calculus or college level maths. 6. They should have spent one semester studying bio-chemistry. But only selected medical schools will require their students to have completed this. Plus when it comes to medical school admissions the admissions department of each school will take a look at the students overall GPA as well as those for their science courses and non science courses separately. |
